SUBSTANCE Chlorine possesses a great affinity for hydrogen; if equal volumes of the two gases are mixed and exposed to sunlight, they combine, forming hydrochloric acid. The liquid can cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Ingestion causes severe burning of mouth and stomach, nausea, vomiting, intense thirst, and diarrhoea. Corrosion of the stomach may lead to gastric perforation and peritonitis. Long-term occupational exposure has been reported to cause gastritis, chronic bronchitis, dermatitis, and photosensitization in workers.
