DROPSY During pregnancy:

-W.Morgon Attending the latter stages of pregnancy though not always confined to this period, is that passive effusion under the skin which medical men recognise as Anasarca. It simply distends the parts, creeps on gradually, and is chiefly confined to the lower limbs. Everybody must remember to have seen poor women when in the family way, and to have heard such people severely blamed for running about with their boots unlaced; when the fact is, that had these approaching mothers attempted to fasten the laces, the size of their limbs would have rendered such an effort ridiculous. This increased dimension of the extremities is provoked by the pressure of the gravid uterus preventing the absorbents from carrying off the fluids of the lower limbs. The best remedy in these cases, and that which should always be tried in the first instance, is lying down with the enlarged limb rather elevated; then to have gentle friction applied outside the stocking till some relief is gained; after which

POLYURIA AND OBSCURE CASES OF RETENTION- CASES AND HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT

-Wilhelm As already stated the diagnosis of an enlargement of the prostate is very easy, if the patients suffer from symptoms of the urinary organs. But there are prostatic patients suffering from a chronic uraemia due to a chronic retention of urine without any symptoms pointing to a prostatic obstruction of the urinary flow. On the contrary most of these patients suffer form a polyuria, the main symptoms pointing to the digestive organs. Nearly all these patients have been diagnosed and treated as cases of malignant diseases of the stomach, of the liver, of the bowels or of diabetes insipidus for many years without any success, till finally and experienced urologist is able to make the correct diagnosis. The following case may illustrate my statement: G.M., 64 years of age, has been suffering for the last 11 years from progressive cachexia; loss of appetite, increased thirst, polyuria, constipation alternating with diarrhoea, flatulence, vomiting, pain in the stomach and in the regio

DIFFERENTIATING SYMPTOMS OF SOME OF CADMIUM SALTS Cadmium sulphate

-Farokh J Master. Upon administration, Cadmium sulphate elicits a number of striking reactions that are commonly seen in all the other cadmiums. First of all, the Cadmium patient feels cold, is always freezing, and all symptoms are aggravated by cold or from cold changes in the weather. Cadm. sulph. also induces weakness and fatigue. Upon closer examination, this weakness is found to be accompanied by a cachectic state that simulates the cachexia of advanced cancer or pernicious anemia. Mentally there is a marked increase in irritability, with a horror of solitude and work. Some uncommon sleep symptoms that resemble the carbons and the snake poisons are often seen, e.g., sleeps with eyes open; stops breathing on going to sleep; wakes up suffocating; symptoms worse after sleep annoyingly protracted sleeplessness; insomnia. Cad.sulph. acts most intensely on the gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea which is aggravated by motion; later there is vomiting of acid or yellow substances. Accom

DYSPEPSIA AND GASTRIC ULCER by P. JOUSSET, M.D.

DYSPEPSIA It is an affection characterised by the slowness and the difficulty of digestion. The principal symptoms of this affection are a more or less painful weight in the region of the stomach, eructations regurgitations, and sometimes vomiting, constipation, or diarrhoea. Also there are other symptoms not referred to the stomach and which will find their place in the following description. The history of intestinal dyspepsia is based upon the manifestations of disturbances several hours after meals and the coincidence of intestinal colic. The affection is never found alone, and it is but a sequelae of gastric dyspepsia, the only one which we admit. Dyspepsia is usually a symptomatic affection. It is noticed in the following diseases: tetter, gout, haemorrhoids, hypochondriasis, hysteria, chlorosis, chronic gastritis simple ulcer of stomach and cancer of this viscus. Dyspepsia is also present, either as a precursory phenomenon, a transient symptom, or as part of the cachectic state,

-JOUSSET P Dyspepsia with marked Gastric Symptoms. The principal remedies are Nux Vomica , Graphites, Bryonia, Pulsatilla, China Carbo veg., Lycopodium, Lachesis, Baryta carb., and Antimonium crudum. Nux Vomica and Graphites.-Given in alternation. Nux Vomica before meals, and Graphites after, is a good treatment for dyspepsia. Nux Vomica is the principal remedy for the stomach; it is valuable to those who suffer from haemorrhoids, and , as Hahnemann states, to strong, sanguine, and irritable constitutions. Sedentary habits, excess in alcoholic beverage, mental over-work, habitual constipation are also indications for the use of this drug. The gastric symptoms which suggest this drug are disgust for food, with nausea, or a ravenous but easily satisfied hunger; sensation of overloading of the stomach after meals, with flat taste; eructations; bitter and sour regurgitations, pyrosis, and sometimes acid vomiting; malaise; despondency; heat and redness of the cheeks, sometimes accompanied b

DYSPEPSIA HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT contd....

-JOUSSET.P Lycopodium-Intestinal flatulency, with constipation, irresistible drowsiness during digestion are good symptoms indicating this drug. Great belching of tasteless wind . Sharp pain during digestion of food, gastric weight relieved by the smallest amount of food, are less certain signs. Vomiting of food or bile, fullness soon after eating. A deposit of excess of urates in the urine is also a symptom calling for Lycopodium. Doses: Twelfth and 30th dilutions. Lachesis has been little used. Its only indications are extremely painful sensation on pressure over the epigastrium, tightness of the clothing, which is unbearable. Furthermore there is dyspnoea, palpitation, vertigo, headache, weakness of the limbs, and diarrhoea. Baryta carb produces a very characteristic dyspepsia: fullness of the stomach, relieved by eructations, and which, like that in China, sometimes disappears after breakfast; acid regurgitation; nausea; ptyalism; frequent vomiting of mucus; pain at the cardiac end

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR DIABETES:

Uranium nitrate. [Uran-n] This remedy is praised highly by Hughes and others in diabetes originating in dyspepsia. It has polyuria, polydipsia, dryness of the mouth and skin. It causes sugar in the urine. Dr. Laning said that no remedy gives such universally good results; it lessens the sugar and quantity of the urine; he recommended the 3X trituration. It is when the disease is due to assimilative derangements that **Uranium is the remedy, and symptoms such as defective digestion, languor, debility and much sugar in the urine, enormous appetite and thirst, yet the patient continues to emaciate. **Syzygium jambolanum is a remedy capable of diminishing the amount of sugar in the urine, especially when used in the tincture and lower triturations, and some cases have been reported cured, but it cannot be considered a reliable drug , and its use seems entirely palliative. Phosphoric acid [Ph-ac] corresponds to diabetes of nervous origin; the urine is increased, perhaps milky in color and c

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR WOMEN DISEASES:

-Amenorrhoea, Dysmenorrhoea, Leucorrhoea, etc. Pulsatilla. [Puls] Pulsatilla is one of the first remedies thought of in affection peculiar to women. Its essentially feminine disposition of gentleness timidity, mildness, docility - "excellent thing in woman" - is most characteristic of the drug; even tearfulness, another feminine attribute, strongly points to Pulsatilla. Then, too, we have fickleness, indecision and changeableness, which are certainly characteristic of Pulsatilla and of some women. On the female organs Pulsatilla exerts a decide action; first let us note its effect on menstruation. It has a scanty menstrual flow with severe griping pains which are very severe at times, so severe that the patient can hardly bear the pain, it doubles her up. Thus, Pulsatilla, becomes a useful remedy in dysmenorrhoea. Dark menses which are delayed and accompanied with this severe menstrual colic and the characteristic temperament will be the indications; Chamomilla has dark mense

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR WORMS:

Cina [Cina] Produces a perfect picture of the wormy child. The patient is cross, irritable, has a sickly pale face with rings about the eyes, grates the teeth at night and has a tendency to convulsions; there is canine hunger or variable appetite; the child picks at its nose and cries out in its sleep; there is jerking of the hands and feet and a milky urine. It does not correspond well to pin-worms and a noticeable symptoms is a bluish color about the mouth. Santonine. [Sant] The alkaloid of Cina is also a remedy for round worms. It is not a safe remedy as Cina and no more efficacious. The writer has observed convulsions produced by its use in too low potencies. Caladium. [Calad] Useful when worms travel over the perineum and get into the vagina in little girls, with tendency to excite masturbation. Teucrium. [Teucr] The remedy for ascarides or pin-worms; there is much irritation caused by them in the rectum. Hughes prefers the tincture or lower dilutions, saying that it rarely fails

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR ANEMIA:

Ferrum metallicum. [Ferr] Iron is the great allopathic remedy for anaemia from almost any cause. It is also a great homoeopathic remedy, but it will not cure every case of anaemia; careful individualization is necessary. When the patient has an ***appearance of full bloodedness or plethora, which is followed by paleness or earthiness of the face and puffiness of the extremities, then **Ferrum will benefit. It is not the remedy for the anaemia resulting from loss of fluids; that is **Cinchona, or perhaps **Natrum muriaticum. When **Ferrum is indicated the mucous membranes are pale, more so than with **Cinchona, and there is apt to be an anaemia murmur in the veins of the neck. The patient is easily exhausted. Vomiting of food after eating may occur. The patient is constantly chilly and perhaps has an afternoon or evening fever simulating hectic fever. In very stubborn cases sometimes **Ferrum phosphoricum may serve better than Ferrum metallicum. Schuessler recommends first **Calcarea ph

CHOLESTERINUM nosode works on gall-stone colic

- Cholesterine C26H44O. Swan appears to have taken his hint from Burnett's work and potentized the remedy, using a gall-stone for his preparations. Like many of the rest of the nosodes originally introduced by Swan, the work was necessarily empirical, yet he affirms after much experience that it is "almost a specific from gall-stone colic; relieves the distress at once. " And this after failure with Nux, Cinchona, Carduus. Podophyllum and other apparently well-selected remedies. Yingling reports some curses of gall- stone colic and other diseases of the liver in the Medical Advance, page 549, August, 1908. Clarke says, it is found in the blood, in the brain, the yolk of eggs, seeds and buds of plants, but is most abundant in the bile and biliary calculi. It occurs in the form of crystals with a mother-of-pearl lustre, and is fatty to the touch. It is soluble in both alcohol and ether. Ameke claimed to have derived great advantage from its use in cases diagnosed

ADENOIDS:

Adenoids (or pharyngeal tonsils, or nasopharyngeal tonsils) are a mass of lymphoid tissue situated at the very back of the nose, in the roof of the nasopharynx, where the nose blends into the mouth. Normally, in children, they make a soft mound in the roof and posterior wall of the nasopharynx, just above and behind the uvula. Hydrastis Hydrastis is perfectly homoeopathic to the totality of the symptoms produced by adenoid vegetations, it has the yellow mucus and general lymphoid hypertrophy.Dr. Lambrechts, of Antwerp, uses a tampon of Hydrastis and glycerine, one part of the tincture to six of glycerine, introduced deep into each nostril, having the child make inspiration leaving it there about fifteen minutes. He regards surgical intervention as merely palliative and medical treatment indispensable.Kali bichromicum may also be indicated. Calcarea phosphorica [Calc.p] Highly recommended by copper, Clifton and many others as a most efficacious remedy in adenoid vegetations. It corresp
